In our efforts to make information more accessible to the general public, Abre Puerto Rico created the first open data platform in the country in March 2014, www.AbrePR.org. Since its launch, Abre PR has collected thousands of government data and documents, through collaboration agreements with government agencies, formal information requests, and multiple visits to agencies.
The portal centralized much of the information from state government agencies with easy and dynamic access. For the first time, the citizen could have the information in his hands without having to visit the different government agencies. The platform also had analytical tools that allowed citizens to interact with the information collected from the same page. Thanks to these efforts, the abrepr.org portal became the main data center for citizens in and outside of Puerto Rico, receiving over 10,000 visits per month.
The launch of this portal prompted the development of other similar tools within the government of Puerto Rico to promote transparency. In 2015, the Office of Information Technology of the Government of Puerto Rico launched its own open data portal, www.data.pr, as well as a portal of performance indicators, www.indicators.pr. These tools are currently managed by the Puerto Rico Institute of Statistics, an entity that has continued its effort to improve access to information through technology.
With the strengthening of the open data ecosystem, ABRE Puerto Rico decides to discontinue the effort to collect and deposit information from all agencies in its open data portal to focus on specific projects, such as the Fiscal Health Index and abretusecuela.org.
“La recuperación de Puerto Rico no será posible si no estamos informados. No podremos estar informados si no tenemos los datos. ABRE ha hecho un trabajo crítico para dar a conocer lo que ocurre en nuestros pueblos y comunidades.”
